Playing the Field: Cam Newton’s bizarre press conference

Smile Cam! It could be worse. You could be on the Browns.

It’s Monday, which means it’s time to wrap up another crazy Sunday in the NFL.

And we start with the bizarre ramblings of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Newton has struggled mightily in his second season in the NFL. Through six games, he has five passing touchdowns (three rushing), six interceptions and four lost fumbles. His numbers are down pretty much across the board from his tremendous rookie season. Oh, and the Panthers are 1-5.

That brings me to Newton’s postgame press conference after an ugly, 19-14, loss to the Cowboys.

The highlights are many, starting with Newton appealing to the media for suggestions on how to improve the team.

“I’m going to bring in a suggestion box. And I want your suggestions in that suggestion box, because I sure don’t know. I really don’t,” Newton told reporters.

Apparently someone dropped “Fire the GM” into that box, because the team fired Marty Hurney on Monday morning.

In addition to the suggestion box” line, he also called a female reporter “sweetheart” during the conference. That’s not good.

“The only thing I control, sweetheart, is myself.”

The sweetheart line comes at the 2:30 mark, right after the suggestion box.

Oh, and yes, I’m definitely including that sweater among the bizarre aspects of the press conference.

More Gangnam Style

The Gangnam Style invasion continues, with the latest attack coming via NFL celebrations.

Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul busted it out when he sacked Robert Griffin III yesterday. I give it a 9. Impressive effort from JPP.

Then we had most of the Panthers offense doing it in the end zone after fullback Mike Tolbert scored. Jonathan Stewart was quick to join in. (Notice: No Cam Newton involved.) I give it a 6 though. The offensive line really screwed it up at first.

And finally, we had the current king of the TD celebration dance, Stevie Johnson of the Bills celebrating after his score yesterday. I give him a 7. It was decent, but his Plaxico Burress dance was better (and costlier).
