The best savory waffle this side of the Atlantic

I didn’t know that I have never had a real waffle until I bit into the extraordinary flakiness of Wafles & Dinges’ most popular waffle, the BBQ pulled pork.
It was a cold day but, lucky for me, there wasn’t a very long line when I got to the mustard yellow truck with the Belgian flag flapping in the wind. As I looked up at the extensive menu and asked them what the best savory waffle was, I knew that I had to have the one described as “where Brussels meets Biloxi”.
The BBQ Pulled Pork Wafle cost me $8.50 and it was the best waffle I have honestly ever had. The waffle itself was flaky and very fluffy. Topped with what Al Roker calls “the BEST pulled pork BBQ on the East Coast”, the pork itself was the perfect amount of sweetness to complement the crunch of the waffle.
The last perfect little bit of flavor was in the little bit of spicy sauce that my server poured on top and coupled with a slightly bitter, very peppery coleslaw that was topped with a hot pink coolikle (a pickle that has red kool aid added, hence the color). That was definitely the best little surprise!
My favorite bite of flavor was when I combined a forkful of the slaw with a bite of that sweet pork. That was a mouthful of heaven and definitely one that I would have again many, many times. The only thing that made it better was finishing it all with the chocolate-covered mini waffle.
Officially launched in October 2007 by Thomas DeGeest to sell the first Liege waffle in Soho, Wafles & Dinges now includes three trucks and five dessert carts that you can regularly find serving up lunch and dinner from Wall Street, City Hall Park, Astor Place, Columbus Circle and many midtown locations.
