Playing the Field: Carmelo Anthony fasts for 15 days

Carmelo Anthony is very hungry.

We finally figured out why Carmelo Anthony was so mad about Kevin Garnett’s Honey Nut Cheerios comment.

He was starving himself.

The Knicks forward and MVP candidate casually dropped the news that he had been fasting for 15 days. FIFTEEN DAYS! Carmelo, you’re a professional athlete, how is that even possible?

“No meats. No carbs,” Anthony told reporters after the Knicks beat the Hornets Sunday afternoon. “I don’t know how I was out there competing at a high level.”

Yeah, so do we. Oh wait, he wasn’t.

Anthony played six games over the last 15 days and he shot just 42.3 percent despite still scoring 32.3 points per game. He’s also shooting just 38.9 percent from 3-point range. In his first 24 games of the season he was shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from 3. His points (28.3 ppg) were actually up during the fast, but only because he was taking more shots — 20.7 attempts per game vs. 26 attempts while fasting.

“I usually do it sometimes to get some clarity in my life,” Anthony said. “I’m done now. I can’t do it anymore. I surrender.”

Good call, Carmelo.

He was asked (by a very ballsy reporter) at an event launching his new shoe after the game yesterday whether he’d be willing to break his fast with a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.

“I’m definitely going to get a bowl of that, for sure,” Anthony joked.
