3 design trends we love

Twice each year the Javits Center in New York City is packed with the latest and greatest in lamps, rugs, salad bowls and more as the New York International Gift Fair displays housewares to store buyers and media outlets. Here are three trends to note before you start redecorating your digs.

Linen with sparkle

Natural linen was everywhere: on furniture upholstery, pillows, bedding and tabletop goods. Threads of metallic, shiny trims and adornments helped to decorate this rather plain, humble fabric. One designer that stood out was Ann Gish (maker of high-end luxury bedding), who incorporated a hand-painted look of shimmer or sparkle into the fabric. 1970s Marrakech

The geometrics of the 1970s took a sophisticated turn this season by incorporating richer colors that resembled patterns often found in Moroccan textiles, rugs and ceramics. Zig-zag, fish scales and tilework were three hot looks, and famed designer Jonathan Adler nailed them all with his Carnaby collection of lamps, trays and mugs.

Feeling blue

One of the old-time design classics has been given resurgence in the contemporary world — many hip exhibitors were showing products that resembled blue and white porcelain. This classic color combination looks great with warm neutrals and can also hold its own against strong bursts of color.
Ink Dish’s Irezumi 4-piece dinner set, designed by famed Sunset Strip tattoo artist Paul Timman, features iconic blue and white Japanese-inspired imagery. $75, www.inkdish.com
