A sunny gem in the North End

Quaint narrow streets, atmospheric cafés, great Italian restaurants, and, well, pokey apartments is, generally, an accurate overview of the North End, otherwise known as Boston’s Little Italy. Oh, that and the worst parking on the planet, of course. So the condo for sale on Stillman Street stands as something of an anomaly.

“Homes in the North End typically have small dark rooms,” says realtor Jennifer Taves. “This loft style apartment is quite unusual for the area. It has 11-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, which gives amazing space and light and sunshine. It’s quite phenomenal for the North End. When you walk in, it’s like wow!”

The building was originally built as a cigar factory in 1891. It then became Castignetti Bros. Tuxedo, a textile factory and a shop. This unit was Castignetti’s retail storefront before the building was turned into 28 condos in 2001.

“This was where the wealthy Bostonians would go for their formal wear,” says Taves. “They could have kept it as a retail unit, but it has made such a grand apartment. It’s a corner unit with private entry and the premier condo in the building.”

The split-level home has a living area with a 12-foot ceiling and a gorgeous exposed brick wall. The master bedroom suite includes a full bathroom and a dressing area kitted out with custom designed closets. “This really is the clothes horse’s dream apartment,” jokes Taves.

An elevator allows access to the lobby and a common roof deck with, “amazing views,” says Taves. The building is also pet-friendly.

“And you can have more than one,” says Taves. “The last owners had two bulldogs who would sit in the window soaking up the sun.”
