It’s the nightmare scenario no pregnant woman wants to be in: Andrea Johnson and her husband James were at home, three hours away from the closest hospital when Andrea started going into early labor. The contractions  became so severe so quickly that the couple didn’t think they would make it to the hospital before the baby was born.

Not knowing what else to do, James used an app called First Opinion to text a doctor, who walked him through delivering the baby himself. James had no medical training, but by following the doctor’s orders via text, he delivered a healthy baby boy.

First Opinion founder McKay Thomas came up with the idea for the app when he and his wife lived in a foreign country, hours away from her doctor. Users who download the app for free can communicate with a doctor through text; it takes an average of 9 minutes for a doctor to answer their questions. This may seem like a lengthy wait if you are in a dire situation, but the reality is most people spend an average of 20 to 70 minutes in a waiting room before a doctor is available to see them. There is also the option to pay $9 a month for a faster texting response time.
