Hackers crack Touch ID fingerprint sensor on iPhone 5S

Snoops rejoice: Hackers from the Chaos Computer Club have already figured out how to bypass Touch ID, the iPhone 5S‘ impressive new fingerprint sensor. Touch ID makes users use their fingerprint to open their iPhones instead of a password, supposedly making the phones more secure. Be forewarned that it isn’t a simple hack: You need plenty of chutzpah and a lot of materials to boot.

But if you insist on sneaking through your significant other’s text messages, members of the Chaos Computer Club have provided a step-by-step guide for amateur private eyes and an accompanying video. You’ll need graphite powder, cyanoacrylate, image editing software, wood glue, glycerine and theatrical glue. We’re willing to bet the list is enough to make most people give up right … now.

The hackers warned against relying on Touch ID and made an impassioned case against biometric identification. “We hope that this finally puts to rest the illusions people have about fingerprint biometrics,” said Frank Rieger, spokesperson of the Chaos Computer Club, in a statement. It is plain stupid to use something that you can´t change and that you leave everywhere every day as a security token. The public should no longer be fooled by the biometrics industry with false security claims. Biometrics is fundamentally a technology designed for oppression and control, not for securing everyday device access.”
