Nokia reportedly has a ‘Super’ selfie phone in the works

Nokia wants to make your selfies a bit easier to snap.

Codenamed “Superman,” the new handset will feature a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a setup that equals or betters the rear-facing system on a number of mid-level smartphones already on the market.

Expected to be one of the first new phones to launch once Microsoft has fully integrated the handset maker into its business, according to sources that spoke to The Verge, the Superman is also reported to have a 4.7-inch display and mid-level specs. That should make it easy to hold with one hand for quick self-portraits, and affordable, too.

Selfies will be easier to take with the new Nokia phone, codenamed “Superman.”

It’s worth pointing out that Nokia is not the only company focused on selfies at the moment.

The new HTC Desire 816, which launches this month, also boasts a front-facing 5-megapixel camera for the same reason, and Samsung has taken things to a whole new level with the NX Mini — an ultra-slim interchangeable lens camera with a flip-up tilting viewfinder optimized for selfies and light enough to carry alongside a smartphone.

However, where the Superman may live up to its name is in imaging quality. There may be many criticisms leveled at Windows Phone devices, but camera performance is not one of them.

Nokia is brilliant at integrating innovative, pro-level and intuitive imaging features into its handsets from the cheapest Asha feature phone through to its DSLR-baiting Lumia 1020 smartphone.

As for a release date, don’t expect to see the phone until at least July, when the latest software update for Windows Phones will be released; and when it does arrive, it will have company. At least three other new Microsoft/Nokia handsets are expected to be unveiled before the end of 2014.
