Southern California has a well of wellness-related fun. Located about 40 miles north of San Diego, the coastal city of Carlsbad has been tempting vitality-loving visitors since it tapped its mineral spring in 1882.

In keeping with its healthful history, some of the city’s most popular resorts and spas will hold a Women’s Wellness Weekends this May, offering a variety of tranquil activities that range from personalized spa treatments to a farm-to-table tour, sunrise yoga on the beach, and more.

“We really want this to be an intimate experience,” says Jeannette Handson, Spa Director at the Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa. “We work very hard to make sure the therapist embraces you.”

Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa, Beach Terrace Inn, West Inn & Suites, Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa and Omni La Costa Resort & Spa are all offering discount packages for the Women’s Wellness Weekends promotion next month. The promotion offers savings of 30 percent off regular rates.

What to do:
While there’s no doubt that indulging in spa treatments is any gal’s idea of a perfect weekend, Carlsbad offers plenty of options for those looking to stay active on their retreat.

“When you’re in a vehicle, and you’re going through Southern California, I think you can miss a lot,” said Zack Cummins, an electric bicycle tour guide at Pedego Carlsbad.

“I know when I ride a bike by the coast, you can hear the waves, you can experience nature more. It allows you the opportunity to pull off to the side and lock your bike up anywhere. There are a lot of beautiful things to see around here.”

Visitors can also enjoy a tractor ride through The Flower Fields. The sprawling 50-acre ranch blooms with beauty as rows of colorful giant tecolote ranunculus flowers soak up the sun on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Adventure-seekers can enjoy the salt and sun on a stand-up paddleboard, and animal lovers can hike at Batiquitos Lagoon, one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the Southern California coast. Foodies can also delight in a tour of West Inn & Suites’ private 3-acre farm, where they can learn about the authentic farm-to-table cuisine whipped up by executive chef Eugenio Martignago.
