After a nine-alarm blaze broke out at Beacon Towers last April, several residents streamed out of the Back Bay building clutching pets.

But firefighters were helpless against deadly smoke inhalation. Human oxygen masks don’t fit pets, and by the time they are placed in oxygen chambers at the hospital, the damage is done.

Yesterday, however, Boston City Council authorized a $2,267 grant from the WellPet Corporation for the fire department to receive 35 pet oxygen masks. They will receive them on Sept. 29, along with another 25 masks from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association. “It’s crucial they receive oxygen as soon as possible,” Brian Adams of MSPCA-Angell said.
