Man arraigned on charge he accidentally dragged pit bull with car

A man accused of dragging his pet pit bull with a truck after accidentally forgetting the 2-year-old dog was outside the vehicle was arraigned in Lowell District Court Wednesday on an animal cruelty charge.

Timothy Nicholas, 60, of Lowell, was released on personal recognizance and ordered to possess no animals.

The dog, whose leash was tied to the inside of the truck, suffered serious injuries to its paws, legs, and stomach after being dragged around 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26 near Hidlreth Street and Aiken Avenue in Lowell.

The dragging reportedly lasted for about half of a mile.

The dog underwent two hours of surgery at an animal hospital in Dracut. It remains hospitalized.

Police were alerted to the the incident by a number of witnesses who called in to report it, WBZ reported.

Nicholas is due back in court on Monday.
