Police have arrested a man in connection with the early morning kidnapping and knifepoint rape of a woman in the South End.

Eduardo Rodriguez, 31, was found by police near Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard and arrested, according to a statement from the department.

Investigators said Rodriguez was on a bicycle when he approached a woman walking near Greenwich Park and Claremont Street around 1 a.m. Monday morning. He allegedly told her he had a knife and forced her to walk to the Carter Playground, where the sexual assault took place.

He then allegedly fled towards Davenport Street in the direction of Tremont Street.

Rodriguez is charged with aggravated rape, indecent assault and battery, armed robbery, intimidation of a witness and aggravated kidnapping. He’s scheduled to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.

“I applaud the courage and strength of the survivor in this incident,” Police Commissioner William Evans said in a statement. “She showed incredible bravery. I am also grateful to my detectives for their hard work and commitment in identifying and arresting this violent felon and removing him from the streets of this city.”
