A Massachusetts police officer was arrested on rape charges late Tuesday, officials said.

Brian Butler, a Salem police officer, is charged with rape and indecent assault and battery, according to the Essex district attorney's office.

Butler was arrested by state police. His bail has been set at $25,000.

Butler is married to Salem's police chief, Mary Butler, according to the department.

Mary Butler is not accused of any misconduct and has taken personal time this week to deal with the matter.

Brian Butler is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Salem District Court.
