A bunch of baloney: Sandwich-wielding seniors, workers to protest at Boston Symphony Hall

If it looks and smells like a deli on Mass. Ave. tonight, it’s because a group of protesters are fed up with budget-related boloney.

Dozens of sandwich-wielding seniors and workers will join Mass Uniting in a descent upon Boston’s Symphony Hall Wednesday evening for a “Stop the Boloney” costumed protest of the fiscal plans to be presented by self-proclaimed “deficit hawk,” Erskine Bowles.

According to Mass Uniting, a grassroots coalition of community groups, neighborhoods, faith organizations and worker advocates, the 7 p.m. protest will coincide with roughly 100 nation-wide demonstrations against Bowles’ Fix the Debt plans to slash Social Security, Medicare and other programs in favor of new corporate tax breaks.

The group has staged similar costumed protests in which demonstrators performed remixes of pop-culture songs.

With the federal sequester deadline looming, Bowles and partner Alan Simpson released a new version of their deficit reduction blueprint to Congress this week. Though light on details, the revised plan would cut Social Security and other programs by an estimated $3.8 trillion, while calling for only $1.3 trillion in new revenue – a three-to-one ratio of cuts to income.

The picket will happen outside Symphony Hall, at the intersection of Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues, according to organizers.
