Many of us heard about the Boston Marathon explosions via Twitter. It’s a fascinating tool, but it can be taken advantage of.

A fake Boston Marathon twitter account was created promising to donate $1 to Boston Marathon victims for every retweet.

The account was retweeted 52,173 times and favorited by 850.

People were quick to notice that the official Twitter account for the Boston Marathon is @BostonMarathon and not @_BostonMarathon.

Twitterers started calling out the fake Twitter handle for exploiting the tragedy and the page has since been suspended.

Around 2:45 p.m. this afternoon two explosions went off near the finish life of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street.

Two people are confirmed dead, an 8-year-old reportedly being one of the victims.

President Barack Obama addressed the nation a few hours after the explosions and promised justice.

“We still do not know who did this or why. People should not jump to conclusions before we know the facts,” Obama said. “Make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this. We will find out who did this and why they did this. Any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”

He added, “Boston is a tough and resilient town and so are its people.”
