Boston University names third Marathon victim, grad student Lingzi Lu

One of the victims killed by blasts at the Boston Marathon on Monday has been identified as a Boston University graduate student, according to university officials.

Lingzi Lu, a graduate student in mathematics and statistics, was one of three friends watching the race near the finish line. Another of the three students, also in graduate school at the university, was injured and is in stable condition at Boston Medical Center, officials said.

A former middle school teacher spoke with a Chinese TV station about the graduate student before her death was confirmed.

“She was exceptionally smart and down to earth,” Yang Yongkun told Phoenix. “Even though it has been many years, my impression of her is still deep.”

Robert Hill, dean of Marsh Chapel, visited the injured student Monday evening and again Tuesday afternoon. He reports that she underwent surgery on both days. “She is doing well,” said Hill. “She has her friends around her, and she will soon have family around her.”

The third BU student was unharmed.

The explosions, detonated seconds apart at about 3 p.m. near the finish line on Boylston Street, killed three people and injured more than 170. Two others were killed: 8-year-old Martin Richard of Dorchester, Mass., and Krystle Campbell, 29, of Arlington, Mass.
