Mom wants ‘pornographic’ Diary of Anne Frank pulled from curriculum

Middle school can be a very transformative time for young students. From the sixth to the eighth grade we start to figure out who we are and what we like. We start to develop a taste in music and literature.

In middle school students jump from kid books like ‘Harriet the Spy’ to more adult books such as ‘The Outsiders,’ ‘The Giver’ and ‘The Diary of a Young Girl.’

A Michigan mother thinks some material may be forcing her little girl to grow up too quickly.

Gail Horalek wants Anne Frank’s ‘The Diary of a Young Girl’ pulled from her daughter’s middle school curriculum. Horalek is calling the classic book “pornographic.”

“The problem is the school is giving the seventh graders inappropriate material and not explaining it to the parents,” Horalek told Patch.

Horalek’s issue lies with the unedited version of the book, which was added to the school’s curriculum this past year.

This is the passage Horalek does not agree with, courtesy of MyFoxDetroit:

“Until I was eleven or twelve, I didn’t realize there was a second set of labia on the inside, since you couldn’t see them. What’s even funnier is that I thought urine came out of the clitoris … when you’re standing up, all you see from the front is hair. Between your legs there are two soft, cushiony things, also covered with hair, which press together when you’re standing, so you can’t see what’s inside. They separate when you sit down and they’re very red and quite fleshy on the inside. In the upper part, between the outer labia, there’s a fold of skin that, on second thought, looks like a kind of blister. That’s the clitoris.”

Horalek said she thought it was “awesome” that her daughter choose to read the classic book, but the young middle schooler became uncomfortable with this above passage. Horalek said this particular material is inappropriate for seventh grade students.

“It doesn’t mean my child is sheltered, it doesn’t mean I live in a bubble and it doesn’t mean I’m trying to ban book,” she said.

Horalek said parents are required to sign permission slips with students will be shown a movie that contains profanity and believes the same should be done for books.
