Former Temple University head football coach Wayne Hardin has been selected to the 2013 class of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Hardin, who coached the Owls from 1970 to ’82, is the winningest coach in the school’s history with a 80-52-3 record. His 1979 team won the Garden State Bowl over the Cal Golden Bears, the first bowl championship in the program’s history.

“This is a great day for Temple University,” Kevin Clark, the university’s interim athletic director, said in a news release. “Wayne Hardin is not only a Hall of Fame football coach, but a Hall of Fame person. The entire Temple community is grateful that he has been selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.”

Former Temple coaches Glenn S. “Pop” Warner, who coached the team from 1933 to ’38 and was inducted in 1951, and Ray Morrison, who coached from 1940 to ’48 and inducted in 1954, are the only other inductees who either played or coached for the university.

Hardin, who also coached Navy from 1959 to ’64, will be inducted Dec. 10 in New York.
