The old adage about man’s best friend has again proven two be true – Delaware State Police are crediting a 31-year-old woman’s four-legged companion with thwarting a robbery attempt in Wilmington on Saturday night.

Investigators said the woman was walking her dog on an unlit footpath near Shipley Road and Philadelphia Pike when shortly before 10 p.m., she was confronted by two unknown men demanding money.

The woman’s dog began to growl and bark at the men, keeping them at bay until the victim was able to escape, according to police.

The suspects didn’t follow her, and no injuries were reported.

In a release, Delaware State Police said troopers are urging the public to be alert, walk in pairs or groups, avoid dark or unlit areas, be aware of their surroundings and conceal their valuables.

Anyone with information about Saturday night’s robbery attempt is asked to contact the Robbery Unit by dialing 302-834-2630 ext. 6, to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, or to submit a tip by texting CRIMES (274637) with the keyword DSP, by filling out  this online form or by downloading the Delaware State Police Mobile Crime Tip application.
