Cambridge start-up Split My Taxi is jumping on the demand for cheap and convenient transportation around Boston.

The app lets people in need of transportation find matches based on origin, destination, and time. The matches then split a taxi and pay half the fare each, making it not only an affordable option, but a greener one.

“People have been using it a lot after midnight, because there is no public transportation at that time,” said David Zadok, CEO of Split My Taxi, who founded the company in December with the help of MIT Freshman Adam Eagle.

Zadock also points to the social component of the app’s success.

“Using split my taxi is like going on a date. They meet a stranger, and they talk. If you want, you can just see the list of matches and talk with them before getting in a cab together.”

The app is live in cities across the nation, and is available at SplitMyTaxi.com as well as on the app store as “Split My Taxi.”
