Suspected shooter of 11-year-old girl in Bed-Stuy arrested: cops

An 11-year-old girl was shot in the neck in Bed-Stuy on Friday night, police reported.

Police made an arrest shortly after. The arrested suspect has been identified as 17-year-old Kane Cooper, whose listed address is a block away from the site of the shooting, according to police reports.

Cops said the girl was shot in front of 600 Gates Avenue.  The shooter was reportedly aiming for two men standing in front of 590 Gates Avenue, when the girl reportedly walked out the door of 600 Gates Avenue and into the line of fire.

She underwent surgery at Kings County Hospital and is now recovering in stable condition at Columbia University Hospital, cops said. While police said they could not confirm, the New York Daily News reported that the bullet severed her spine, leaving her permanently paralyzed. 

She was reportedly standing with her grandmother and seven-month-old niece when she was shot.

Cops tracked the suspect using video footage from a nearby camera, after the Anti-Crime Team recognized him on the video. The Anti-Crime Team canvassed the area and caught the suspect at the corner of Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Madison Street, cops said. He was taken into custody, arrested, and charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault, criminal use of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.  

A police spokesperson said that Cooper is not listed in their database as a gang member or crew member “of any sort,” but cautioned that does not necessarily mean that he is definitively not involved in a gang or crew. However, the spokesperson said that as of now, “as far as the narrative from this event, it’s some sort of dispute” between people in the neighborhood.

Cooper has six prior arrests, including one for criminal possession of a loaded firearm when he was sixteen, according to the spokesperson. Police have not yet recovered a weapon in connection to this incident.
