UPDATE: Police have released the identities of the four-year-old victim and the alleged driver, who has now been arrested.

Police say Franklin Reyes, 17, was driving the car that hit and killed 4-year-old Bronx resident Ariel Russo.

Reyes is being charged with manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter.

Russo’s 55-year-old grandmother was also hit and injured in the collision. She was brought to St. Luke’s Hospital in critical condition but is now listed as stable, cops said.

Police say Reyes waived Miranda rights and told detectives he took his mother’s car without permission and was on his way to St. Agnes Boys High School, where he is a student.

He only has a learner’s permit, cops said.

He reportedly told detectives that he fled from the police out of panic when he was pulled over.

Metro’s original story is below.

A traffic stop gone awry killed a 4-year-old girl on the Upper West Side on Tuesday, according to police.

Officers pulled over a car driving recklessly at 8:15 a.m. on 89th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues, cops said. When they approached the car on foot, the driver took off, turning onto Amsterdam Avenue. The officers jumped back in their car and followed him to 97th Street, where he made a left turn, lost control of the car, jumped the curb and crashed into a building, pinning a 55-year-old woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter against it. The driver reversed, trying to flee, but backed up into a parked car, according to the police report.

He was apprehended and taken into police custody at the scene, cops said. The Highway Collision Investigation Squad was called to the scene.

The girl and her grandmother were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital.

Police say the 4-year-old was pronounced dead at 9:02 a.m. Her grandmother remains in critical condition.
