Despite rain, Union Square rally for Ed Snowden went on
Around 20 people gathered in the rain in Union Square today to show their support for National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Organizers of the event said they hope Snowden’s actions will raise concerns about civil rights and liberties, particularly with regard to privacy issues.
“As young people in the digital era, it is imperative that we have an understanding of what happens to the data we create and post, with or without our consent,” said rally organizer Yoni Miller.
Snowden, a former contractor at Booz Allen-Hamilton, leaked documents about a domestic surveillance program carried out by the NSA.
The leak of such classified information has caused many of Snowden’s supporters to fear for his safety and they have begun efforts to create “Stand With Edward Snowden” rallies in solidarity with him.
