The NYPD is seeking assistance from the public in identifying a man suspected in a brutal Greenpoint rape last week.

Police describe the man as white or Hispanic, 5-foot-9, and somewhere between 25 and 35 years old. He is accused of raping a woman at knifepoint on the sidewalk of Java Street near McGuinness Boulevard on June 16. He allegedly told the woman he targeted her because he believed her to be gay.

“Sunday’s vicious sexual assault of a young woman in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is disturbing news in the safest big city in the world,” City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Council member Stephen Levin said in a joint statement. “We are deeply troubled by reports that the survivor of this attack may have been targeted because of her sexual orientation. New York City’s greatest strength is our diversity, but in recent months, there has been an unacceptable increase in hate crimes.”

Anyone who recognizes the suspect from the sketch or who might have other information about the crime can call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS, visit the Crime Stoppers Web site, or text their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) be entering TIP577.
