Calling it a “very, very strong circumstantial case,” a judge on Thursday denied bail for former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 27-year-old Dorchester man.

Hernandez, 23, was arrested Wednesday and formally charged hours later for allegedly shooting and killing Odin Lloyd execution-style on June 17 in an industrial area in North Attleboro. His lawyer Thursday argued that Hernandez was not a flight risk, and that the case against him is circumstantial.

The Boston Globe shed light on a possible motive Thursday by reporting that investigators believe that Lloyd may have had information about Hernandez’s suspected role in a 2012 double slaying in Downtown Boston.

The sources said that on July 16 a fight broke out at South End club Cure before Safiro Furtado, 28, and Daniel Abreu, 29, were shot dead at a traffic light at the intersection of Shawmut Avenue and Herald Street.

Witnesses told police the shooter was in a gray or silver SUV with Rhode Island plates.

Investigators believe that Lloyd may have had information about Hernandez’s suspected role in the double slaying.

Suffolk County District Attorney confirmed an investigation into the drive-by shooting was “active and ongoing” but declined to comment on whether Hernandez was a suspect.

On Wednesday night, TMZ.com posted a photograph of Hernandez “brandishing a Glock handgun for a selfie iPhone pic. You can see a magazine inserted into the gun, but it’s unclear if it was loaded.”

The selfie was reportedly taken in Gainesville, FL in 2009, when Hernandez was playing football for the University of Florida.
