The father of an 8-year-old Fitchburg boy who swam across a river and ran for help after their car plunged into the Nashua River is charged with child endangerment and DUI.

According to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Eugenio Garcia was heavily intoxicated when he crashed his car into a guard rail and flipped onto the shore of the Nashua River early Thursday morning.

According to court documents, his son was able to escape the vehicle, swim through the river, climb over the embankment and fence and run barefoot about a mile to his home to alert his family, the Telegram reported.

After the accident, the child told the Department of Child and Family Services that his father had been drinking from 7 p.m. Wednesday until the crash on Thursday. He said his father was “dizzy and tired” and didn’t recognize him before getting into the car because he had drunk so much, according to court documents attained by the Telegram.

Garcia was ordered to return to court on Aug. 20.
