Two Boston Police officers today shot and wounded a man who was allegedly selling crack cocaine in a South Boston neighborhood.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. at 371 Old Colony Ave., shortly after police responded to a report of a woman smoking crack cocaine near the Mary Ellen McCormack housing development in South Boston.

Police cited the woman, who was not identified, for smoking the illegal substance and asked where she purchased it. Within moments, officers spotted a man who matched the description of her alleged dealer.

The suspect, who police did not identify, attempted to flee on foot, and the officers pursued. During the chase, the suspect turned toward police and began shooting. Police returned fire, and shot the suspect in the chest. He was transported with life threatening injuries to Tufts Medical Center.

Officers were also transported to area hospitals for further evaluation, according to police.

Investigators said they recovered a firearm from the suspect along with “assorted narcotics.”

Boston Police Superintendent-in-chief Daniel Linksey told the Globe he was in “decent condition” at the hospital.
