Jury to hear more from Bulger’s crime partner

The man who once considered James “Whitey” Bulger a friend will continue to testify against the alleged mob boss Monday.

Stephen Flemmi, the 79-year-old former fellow leader of the Winter Hill Gang, will take the stand for a third day on Monday. Once prosecutors are done with their direct questioning, Flemmi will be the subject of what will likely be a long cross examination by Bulger’s lawyers.

His testimony on Friday already consisted of multiple stories of FBI corruption, murder and extortion.

Flemmi recounted the 1981 murder of his girlfriend Debra Davis literally at the hands of Bulger. Flemmi had accidentally told Davis about their relationship with corrupt FBI agent John Connolly. That upset Bulger who said several times that he wanted to kill Davis, according to Flemmi.

Flemmi eventually agreed and Bulger allegedly strangled her at Flemmi’s mother’s house.

“It happened. It’s affected me and it’ll affect me until the day I die,” Flemmi said.

Also during his testimony, Flemmi detailed his and Bulger’s relationships with FBI agents and how it was able to keep them out of jail for so long.

He talked about the time when Bulger approached the leaders of the gang and asked for permission to talk to Connolly. Flemmi said they agreed because it was always good to have law enforcement sources.

“As open as we were and the notoriety we had, it’d be very difficult to survive” without law enforcement sources, Flemmi said.

Flemmi is one of the government’s last witnesses.

After more than a month of testimony, scores of witnesses and a few curse word-filled outbursts, the government will likely rest its case against Bulger later this week.

Assistant US Attorney Brian Kelly said Friday that after Flemmi, there will be about five more government witnesses before prosecutors rest their case.

Among the last of the witnesses is an FBI agent from Los Angeles who lead the arrest of Bulger when he was caught in Santa Monica in 2011.
