Today, Boston’s popular bicycle-sharing program celebrated its two-year anniversary and announced expansions and improvements.

Hubway launched in July 2011 and has since racked up more than 1 million rides, officials said today at a celebration outside South Station.

The program has expanded to provide more than 1,100 bikes at more than 110 stations in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville to become the area’s largest bike-sharing network. To date, more than 8,100 active annual members and tens of thousands of casual riders have used the service, according to officials.

Hubway statistics:
Total trips: 1,069,766
Total miles ridden: 1.2 million
Total calories burned: 40 million
Total pounds of carbon offset: 285 tons

“We are delighted to be celebrating the one-year anniversary of Hubway in Cambridge together with the other exciting milestones the system has reached,” said Cambridge City Manager Richard C. Rossi. “It has been remarkable to witness the ever-increasing popularity of bike share and we look forward to continuing expansion of the system in the future.”

Three new stations launched in July in Somerville at Teele Square, Packard Avenue/Powderhouse Boulevard, and Highland Avenue/Crocker Street.

Two stations launched in June in Cambridge in Porter Square T and Massachusetts Avenue/Linear Park, with another station launching in Kendall Square in the coming weeks.

Brookline added a station at JFK Crossing on Harvard Avenue at Thorndike Street, and Boston has ordered 20 additional stations and plans to roll them out in August and September.
