The Government Center MBTA station is in need of serious repairs. But the two-year proposed closure that state officials were planning has been delayed.

Originally slated for September, the closure will now start next spring, when the Callahan Tunnel has reopened.

Many people have claimed that the fall closure could be detrimental to commuters, particularly those who are heading to Logan Airport.

“Government Center is a key switch point for travelers headed to Logan Airport and also for those customers who use the Blue Line on a daily basis,” Sara Lavoie, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, told the Globe. “We want to make that experience of using the MBTA during the Callahan closure to be as convenient as possible.”

Some repairs will begin this fall, but without closing the station to T riders.

The station’s revamping is part of a $90 million project to renovate and rebuild the busy City Hall Plaza station, culminating in a stylish glass entrance.
