Billionaire philanthropist George Soros today endorsed the mayoral candidate many are calling the city’s most progressive in the field: Bill de Blasio.

In an endorsement statement, Soros hailed de Blasio’s positions on the controversial stop-and-frisk police practice and early education policies.

“Mr. de Blasio’s commitment to create a truly universal pre-K and after-school system is sound public policy and will have a powerful impact on reducing inequality and improving the lives of generations of New Yorkers,” Soros said.

Soros called stop-and-frisk “demeaning” and credited de Blasio in his position as public advocate with promoting “concrete policy changes” that would cut down on stops “while at the same time maintaining reductions in crime.”

Soros has previously invested in some of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s city initiatives, including sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into the Young Men’s Initiative, a program geared at black and Latino youth in the city.
