Boston mayoral candidate and former cop Charles Clemons is pushing for Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis’s removal, pointing to what he believes to be a poor track record heading up the department.

Clemons said his position is based on Davis’ performance related to increasing crime rates in poor communities, a lack of community engagement, no civilain oversight and lack of diversity at the command level.

The former Boston Police officer of 10 years pointed to statistics offered on the department’s website to back up his claim, noting that homocides with firearms have increased over the time period of January 2012 through July 2013.

“I stand with my brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community both on principle and as a matter of established fact regarding my mayoral platform,” Clemons said. “I have said since the early days of my campaign that I would remove the current police commissioner.”

Clemons said he wants to elect a Civilian Review Board with power to change policy and procedures related to the police department, develop and implement community policing strategies and improve diversity in promotions at the command level.

When asked for Davis’ response to the criticism, a spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department declined to comment.
