Three city newspapers endorse Stringer for comptroller

City Comptroller candidate Scott Stringer scored the endorsements of three major city newspapers over the weekend. The New York Times, The New York Daily News and The New York Post threw their support behind Stringer and denounced his rival Eliot Spitzer.

“Scott Stringer has done an outstanding job as Manhattan borough president and would make a fine New York City comptroller,” The New York Times Editorial Board writes. “He is not a flashy candidate and he has no measurable notoriety. But in this turbulent election season, we don’t need another celebrity office seeker.”

The News called Spitzer “a cheat and a liar.”

“The contrast between Stringer, whose word has been rock-solid and who has worked diligently for advancement, and Spitzer, who hopes to waltz in on nerve and notoriety, makes Stringer the clear, easy choice,” The News writes.

The New York Post said the Spitzer and Anthony Weiner candidacies have turned New York into the laughingstock of America.

“But Anthony Weiner’s weird psychosexual thrill from public humiliation seems honest in comparison to Spitzer, whose version of “contrition” gives off a distinctly Charlie Sheen vibe,” The Post writes.

“Officially, the candidate has been hitting the city’s churches on Sundays asking for a shot at redemption. But anyone who watches a Spitzer campaign ad gets his real message: I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special. I have tiger blood running in my veins.”

They go on to praise Stringer as a “sober, honest man who understands how the city works and how important the job of comptroller is.”

The endorsements are a much needed boost for Stringer who trails Spitzer by 19 percentage points in the latest poll.
