Attack on woman near Tufts University prompts warning

Tufts University police have issued a warning after a woman walking near the Medford campus was forced to the ground during an attempted sexual assault. 

Police said the incident happened as the woman was walking along Boston Avenue near the campus early Wednesday morning.

The woman, who was described by police as a local resident, was walking along Boston Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. when a man made rude comments to her. A couple of minutes later, just after she passed College Avenue, the man approached her from behind and forced her to the ground while attempting to assault her, police said.

She fought back, broke free and ran to a nearby relative’s house. Later in the morning, the woman reported the incident to Medford Police.

Tufts Police issued the safety alert after receiving information of the incident.

The woman was taken to the hospital for cuts.

Police described the suspect as a light-skinned black or Hispanic man in his mid-20s with a dimple in his chin. He was wearing jeans and a white T-shirt.

Police urged people to report any suspicious persons and not to walk alone at night. The department also urged Tufts students to use the GoSafe service available from sunset to sunrise everyday.
