The alleged kidnapper is now an alleged murderer.

Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood announced Tuesday that 30-year-old Ummad Rushdi, the York County man who was already charged with kidnapping his girlfriend’s seven-month-old child from an Upper Darby house, was charged with the infant’s murder.

“This is a barbaric act committed by a barbarian,” Chitwood said.

The child, Hamza Ali, was last seen alive on Aug. 4. while Rushdi and the infant’s mother, Zainab Gaal, visited Rushdi’s parents in Upper Darby. Later that weekend, Rushdi accidentally killed the baby, and then drove to York to bury the remains, according to court documents. The three lived together in Windsor Township in York.

The mother has been placed in a secure location, Chitwood said.

“Every night she’s crying, begging for us to find the baby,” he said. “It’s just not that easy, you know?”

The question is, “What did he do to the baby?” Chitwood said.

The guy knows where the baby is, Chitwood said, but he won’t tell them. Authorities have extensively searched for Hamza Ali’s body in Upper Darby and York to no avail.

“This is the really sad thing,” Chitwood said. “The baby can’t be retrieved.”

Rushdi was charged with murder, kidnapping, disposing and mistreating of a corpse, among others.

“It’s a baby,” Chitwood added. “How can they defend themselves, you know.”
