Delaware State Police arrested an alleged burglar in Millsboro on Monday after the smell of cigarette smoke tipped off a returning homeowner that someone was inside her residence.

Troopers responded around 2 p.m. to the 26000 block of School Lane after receiving a 911 call from a 33-year-old woman, who said she thought someone was in her house.

The woman retreated from the home and called the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center after smelling cigarette smoke inside, according to investigators.

As the woman was on the phone with dispatchers, she allegedly saw a white male wearing an orange shirt jump out a back window of the home and run toward Bay Farm Road.

A trooper who was in the area arrested the suspect, who was later identified as Nathan Orr, 31, of Lewes.

Police allegedly found in Orr’s pockets two syringes and a pipe used to smoke marijuana.

After the victim positively identified the suspect, police took him to Troop 4 and continued the investigation.

Detectives said that during interviews with Orr, he told them that he had gone to the home with another person named Chris.

Once there, the two men allegedly cut the screen of a rear window and climbed inside. Police said they stole electronics, jewelry and a Glock 27 handgun before fleeing.

Orr was caught after he returned to the home to retrieve his cell phone, which he had left behind during the burglary, according to authorities.

All of the stolen property was recovered near a pond close to the residence.

Investigators said they also recovered a credit card taken during the burglary Sunday of a 68-year-old man’s home in Mariner’s Cove.

Orr was arraigned and charged with three counts of theft, two counts each of second-degree burglary and drug paraphernalia possession, and one count each of second-degree conspiracy, theft of a firearm, possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief.

He remained jailed Wednesday at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $16,300 secured bond.
