Philadelphia police on Wednesday made an arrest in the brutal Aug. 19 murder of Daquan Crump, 19, and said a $60 PlayStation console was at the heart of the slaying.

Crump, whose body was found at a remote construction site at 10175 Northeast Ave. in Bustleton, was allegedly murdered by longtime friend Malik Anderson, 18, over a botched deal to steal and sell a PlayStation 3 video game system.

“An investigation revealed Daquan and Malik, who were childhood friends, had conspired to steal another childhood friend’s PlayStation console,” Capt. James Clark of the Homicide Unit said Wednesday.

“Allegedly, Daquan carried out this plan alone without Malik.”

Clark said Crump sold the video game console on the street for $60, cutting Anderson out of the deal.

The two teens were allegedly hanging out in a home with several other friends the night of the murder.

“The decedent and the shooter were then going somewhere else, but they chose to walk through this abandoned lot,” Clark said.

Anderson allegedly let Crump walk several steps in front of him, then shot him once in the back of the head.

“The decedent went down, then [Anderson] stood over his longtime friend and fired nine more times, shooting him in his head and killing him,” Clark said.

Police believe Crump died around 5:30 a.m.

Clark called the murder a lesson for everyone to “be very, very careful of who you call friends and be very careful of who you hang out with.”

“In their mind, this is worth a human life – ‘Because I didn’t get a cut of a $60 profit from a used PlayStation, I’m going to stand over top and shoot a kid I’ve been friends with since I was 10 or 11 years old,’” he said.

“It’s unconscionable and it’s just very, very sad and very, very tragic.”

Anderson was arrested around 5 a.m. Wednesday without incident at his home on the 1800 block of Tomlinson Road in Bustleton.

He will be charged with murder and related offenses.

Police said a .22-caliber handgun was recovered from a refrigerator inside the house and determined to be the murder weapon.

Anderson is believed to have acted alone.

“The investigation is still ongoing and we still have some things that we’re looking at but right now, we fully believe he’s our only shooter and he’s the only one who had involvement in this murder,” Clark said.
