Cantor Fitzgerald 9/11 memorial organizes names by relationships

Visitors to the North Memorial Pool at the 9/11 Memorial may be confused by the names of Cantor Fitzgerald employees engraved on the pool.

They don’t seem to follow any expected order — alphabetical, or by building or company.

The New York Post reports that Cantor Fitzgerald opted for a more meaningful system, arranging the names by relationships, clustering relatives and friends together.

Douglas Gardner, executive managing director at Cantor Fitzgerald, and Douglas Gurian’s names sit kitty corner to one another: Gurian proposed to his wife at Gardner’s Fire Island home; Gardner narrated a video at Gurian’s wedding.

Gurian had left his job at Cantor but was in a meeting at Windows on the World on 9/11.

Between Gurian and Gardner sits trader Calvin Gooding, who, the night before 9/11, had just excitedly promised Gardner’s sister he would sing and give a speech at Gardner’s 40th birthday party on Oct. 5, 2001.

Cantor Fitzgerald reportedly fought for the “meaningful adjacencies.” The New York Post has some of the stories of the groupings here.
