Leominster considers putting police on school buses

Police officers in Leominster may soon be riding the school bus with your children.

With two accidents already this year, Mayor Dean Mazzarella is considering putting police officers on buses or providing police escorts for buses to and from school to improve student safety, the Sentinel and Enterprise reports.

“I don’t know what’s happening. We’ve had two or three (accidents), and school’s only in a week and a half,” Mazzarella said Wednesday. ”The chief is going to get a copy of the actual bus route, and we’ll either put the officers on the buses or follow the buses through the route.”

Thanks to the Justice Assistance Grant from the federal Justice Department, the city can afford to employ the extra patrols.

Police chief Robert Healey echoed Mazzarella’s sentiments, stating that “two (accidents) is unusual this early in the year, so we want to make sure we have an omnipresence.”

Both accidents involved other drivers rear-ending a Leominster school bus.

But while many are in favor of employing extra bus monitors, some feel it would be a waste of funds. City Council President Susan Chalifoux Zephir said it would be an inefficient method of using the funding, and advocates for additional signage on buses as well as using message boards to warn drivers to be on the lookout for buses, the Enterprise reported.
