Clown frightens, confuses UK town of Northampton
Since Friday, the residents of Northampton in the United Kingdom have been reporting sightings of a freaky clown about town.
The Northampton Clown, as he has been dubbed in the media, wears full makeup and costume and holds balloons as he walks around town day and night. Someone who claims to be the clown has a Facebook page called Spot Northampton’s Clown, which has already garnered more than 88,000 likes.
He denied reports on the page that he has been knocking on windowsills and offering to paint people’s homes. He also cleared the air about rumors that he has been carrying a knife and said, “I don’t want to terrorize people; I just want to be spotted.”
The clown posts photos of himself in various locations around Northampton, mostly at night. Though the clown is not on Twitter, he has plenty of fans tweeting under the hashtags #clownwatch and #northamptonclown.Theories about the Northampton Clown abound: Some say it’s part of a marketing ploy for a horror attraction called Dr. Fright’s Halloween Nights, which is located in Northampton, while others say it’s a guerilla ad for the horror clown movie “All Hallows’ Eve.”
One Northampton Herald & Post author claims to have solved the mystery. Reporter Steve Scoles found a short movie on YouTube called “The Local Clown,” and the featured clown wears an identical clown outfit to the Northampton clown. Moreover, the actor playing the clown is based in Northampton. This may be the most exciting thing that has happened in Northampton in a long time — the Herald & Post even published an editor’s letter imploring the people of Northampton not to hate on the clown, especially people who threatened to punch the clown if they saw him.
The clown has more than just the ordinary citizens of Northampton to worry about, though. Boris, the muscled self-titled Clown Catcher, is out on the town searching for the clown. As of two hours ago, he wrote on his Facebook page: “A bit of rain doesn’t faze me … Couldn’t find the clown in the stream.” He suggested earlier that he may join forces with the clown; some have speculated that the two are one and the same.
