DA: Teen driving at 80 mph during Arborway crash, will face charges

An 18-year-old from West Roxbury will face charges for allegedly driving 80 mph on the Arborway and causing a crash that injured six people earlier this month.

Authorities are seeking a criminal complaint against Nikolas Papadopoulos, who is still hospitalized at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, that will charge him with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and civil offenses including speeding, failing to ensure passengers under 16 were wearing seat belts and crossing roadway lane markings, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said Wednesday. He will be summonsed to West Roxbury District Court at a later date.

State police and prosecutors said that Papadopoulos was driving 80 mph on the Arborway near St. Joseph Street in Jamaica Plain when he lost control of the 2013 Mazda he was driving. It jumped the median, began to roll and hit a pickup truck driving in another lane.

Three other teens were in Papadopoulos’ car: a 14-year-old from Chestnut Hill, a 14-year-old from West Roxbury and a 15-year-old from West Roxbury.

The 14-year-old from Chestnut Hill sustained “life-altering injuries” to the brain and spine, authorities said.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old Dorchester man, was critically injured and is still in a medically-induced coma, authorities said. His passenger was released from medical care.
