City Controller Alan Butkovitz offered his support yesterday for City Treasurer Nancy Winkler’s call for a blue ribbon panel to investigate the Market Street building collapse.

Butkovitz said he supported Winkler and her husband, John Bryan, “in their call for an independent blue ribbon panel of national safety and engineering experts to investigate the June 5, 2013 building collapse at 22nd and Market Streets that claimed the life of their daughter Anne Bryan and the lives of five others.”

Winkler’s daughter, Anne Bryan, 24, died when a building under construction collapsed onto the Salvation Army thrift store next door, where Bryan was shopping along with a friend, who also died.

Bryan’s parents filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the building owner, his demolition contractor and subcontractor, the equipment operator and the Salvation Army, among others.

Ten other lawsuits have been filed on behalf of survivors and victims of June’s deadly building collapse that killed six and injured 13. Two of those lawsuits were also wrongful death suits.

Butkovitz said an independent panel that consisted of national experts could fully evaluate the collapse and issue findings or recommendations that can be incorporated into new building inspection protocols.

“I call on Mayor Nutter to give the family members of the victims who lost their lives or were injured in the collapse an opportunity to have a role in the selection of the members that would serve on the panel,” Butkovitz said. “Their work in the formation of a truly independent panel will help citizens in this city feel that everything was done to ensure that the streets, sidewalks and structures are safe in the future.”
