Authorities and the public want to catch the person or persons who horrendously tortured a dog found a few weeks ago in Quincy that a reward fund has been started to find her abuser.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston has set up a website for donations for the reward for information leading to a prosecution. The establishment of the fund comes after a massive outpouring of support since authorities made a public appeal to find the persons responsible for the tortured dog.

“We have been deeply moved by the outpouring of support from people all over the U.S., looking to help us identify who inflicted such pain and suffering on Puppy Doe,” Mary Nee, president of the ARL, said in a statement.

The ARL said on Friday that it had received hundreds of phone calls looking to help and about $2,500 in donations.

Donations made in excess of the $5,000 reward will go toward preventing future cases of animal abuse and neglect, the ARL said.

The pit bull type dog nicknamed “Puppy Doe” was found Aug. 31 in Quincy, authorities said last week. The 1- to 2-year-old dog was less than half of what her weight should have been. She also had various wounds and her tongue was purposely cut to look like a serpent’s tongue.

Despite their best efforts, veterinarians were unable to keep the dog alive.

Anyone with information can call the ARL at 617-226-5610.
