UPDATE: Gunman shoots two, killing one, near Roosevelt Field Mall
Police are on the hunt for a lone gunman who shot two people, killing one, in East Garden City, Nassau County, near Roosevelt Field Mall. Police told Metro the suspect is Sang Ho Kim, 64. Kim walked into 645 South Street at 10 a.m. when he opened fire; he was a former vendor who worked with the business. A law enforcement officer said he is an Asian male and 6-feet-2 inches tall. He drove away from the scene in a 2007 white Honda Pilot with a New York license plate: FMA 3648.
Kim has had three arrests and a bench warrant before in New York for charges that include two DWIs and an attempted giving bribe for public office. He has also been arrested twice in New Jersey for aggravated assault and trademark counterfeiting. He also has an active order of protection against him issued by the San Francisco Police department.
The mall is on lockdown but it has not been evacuated. Police are stationed at each exit and entrance to the mall, and all exits to Meadowbrook Parkway near the mall have also been shut down.
All schools in the Garden City School District are also on “lock-out” while police search for the shooter, which means no one is permitted to enter or exit school buildings, a spokesperson told Metro. “But the school day goes on as usual,” she added.
They do not know when the lock-out will be lifted, she said, and it “has not been determined yet” whether parents will be able to enter the schools to pick up their kids.
“We expect to hear from police shortly to tell us what we need to do next,” the spokesperson said.
