Government shutdown may delay some Sandy relief, Bloomberg says

The government shutdown not only shuttered some of the city’s most popular tourist spots, but will have a detrimental impact on federal aid for Superstorm Sandy recovery, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday.

After his administration discussed the impact with federal officials, Bloomberg said it’s clear that the shutdown will delay processing of Community Development Block grants and other Sandy-related aid.

“Right now, Washington’s gridlock is doing real harm to our nation’s economy–and if they don’t get their acts together soon, New York City families, especially those who endured the worst from Hurricane Sandy, will feel real pain,” Bloomberg said in his weekly radio address, according to prepared remarks.

Waiting longer for grants and loans could hurt businesses in the hardest-hit areas, like the Rockaways, the mayor said.

Critical projects, like dune replenishment and development of coastal protections, might also see delays.

Though all approvals are in place, the federal government hasn’t released the second installment of Sandy recovery funds, Bloomberg said.

“This shutdown should not be used as an excuse to further delay funds that have already been appropriated,” he said.

The shutdown isn’t just affecting families hit by Sandy. Most of the 27,000 federal employees working in the city are furloughed, according to Bloomberg.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “It’s time for Republicans and Democrats in both the Senate and House of Representatives to come together and reach an immediate resolution.”
