VIDEO: Man rides bike on water
Judah Schiller wants to encourage more people to bicycle to work — by demonstrating how easily they can cross the San Francisco Bay or the Hudson River on their bikes.
Schiller, the founder of BayCycle Project, says he was inspired to think of a new way to get bicyclists into the city when he learned that San Francisco’s renovated Bay Bridge would have a bike lane that stopped at Treasure Island, about halfway to San Francisco.
He decided the answer was to be the first person to pedal across the bay, by attaching flotation devices to his regular bike and turning it into a pedal boat.
He released this video of his trip across the San Francisco Bay, and he visited New York City last week to become the first person to bike across the Hudson River, traveling from Hoboken to Manhattan in about 15 minutes.
“BayCycle Project is really about opening a new aquatic frontier in biking, and why not?” Schiller says in the video.
He hopes the project will inspire more people to jump on their bikes and into the water.
