Councilman: Oct. 16 should be ‘Republicans Release Their Hostages Day’
Members of Philadelphia’s City Council on Thursday expressed relief in the wake of the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote Wednesday to reopen the federal government, as well as Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett’s decision the same day to release $45 million in state funding for city schools.
“I want to note that perhaps you should have passed a resolution today calling for ‘Republicans Release Their Hostages Day’ on Oct. 16,” Councilman Bill Green said jokingly Thursday during remarks in Council chambers.
“The federal government yesterday stopped the hostage-taking and we now – at least until January – have an operating, working federal government, which we are all thankful for.”
“And also, Gov. Corbett released the $45 million to our schools,” Green continued.
“I don’t know if they got together and coordinated the release of the hostages yesterday between the state and federal governments, but I was glad to see it.”
