Banksy claims cops are stopping him from making art

Banksy’s latest Instagram update has people wondering if the NYPD has, in fact, gotten to the mysterious street artist.

In lieu of a photo, the box shows text that reads: “Today’s art has been cancelled due to police activity.”

Recent reports have claimed that the NYPD is actively hunting the elusive artist, who has been using the city as a gallery of sorts during the month of October.

A building owner whose building was tagged by the artist reportedly told Gothamist cops called him and tried to encourage him to press charges against the artist.

But according to a law enforcement source, the NYPD is not targeting Banksy.

Police are not doing anything special in pursuit of just one person — except, the source noted pointedly, in their search for a missing 14-year-old autistic boy.

The NYPD has been searching for Avonte Oquendo for more than two weeks. The young boy, who cannot speak, went missing from his school on Oct. 4 and has yet to be found.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly has assigned more than 100 officers whose sole responsibility is looking for the boy. Because he was known to be fascinated by trains and the city’s subway system, every transit officer starts every shift with a sweep for Avonte.
