Allegedly intoxicated man accused of driving down Silver Line tunnel, stealing brother’s identity

A man who gave police his estranged brother’s name is facing charges after he allegedly drove down a Silver Line tunnel while drunk early Friday and crashed into a security barrier.

James M. Tilton, 57, of Wilmington was allegedly drunk when he took a wrong turn into the tunnel near D Street around 1 a.m.

During an arraignment Friday, Tilton was charged under his brother’s name – William Tilton – after presenting the false identity to officials. Prosecutors later said they were looking into the mix-up, although William was expected to have criminal charges and a suspended driver’s license until courts opened Monday.

“Unfortunately he identified himself as his estranged brother William. We are taking the necessary steps to correct it,” said Transit Police Lt. Richard Sullivan in an email to Metro.

Transit Police Superintendent-in-Chief Joseph O’Connor told the Herald that officials would “make sure the proper paperwork is in place to drop the charges against William and charge the correct person, and work with the Registry of Motor Vehicles to have his license reinstated.”

James allegedly failed a sobriety test and registered a .15 on the breathalyzer test – about twice the legal driving limit. He allegedly told officers at the scene that he was returning from a Bruins game, and was instructed by a friend to take the bus-only route.

He plead not guilty, and was ordered to not consume alcohol pending his trial.
