So Mayor Michael Nutter has a compassionate side after all.

As he was driving along Martin Luther King Drive on his way to the office Thursday when one of his assistants, who was about five minutes a head of him, called him to scene of gruesome crash: a bicyclist lay on the ground in his helmet and suit with one shoe off and in excruciating pain.

“A cyclist coming across the street was hit by a motorist,” he said.

The cyclist was hit by a car, went airborne, hit the hood of another car and came down hard on the street. “And he was pretty banged up,” Nutter said. “It was a pretty bad scene.”

When he got to the scene the man was in the middle of the street and he was bleeding from the face and in a lot of pain, Nutter said. The motorist had pulled off to the side of the road.

Nutter called 911.

“They said they had received other calls I just said the citizens in really bad shape and could you get here?” Nutter said.

Nutter’s security detail joined police to stop traffic on the heavily traveled road, “And just stayed with him, kept talking to him, he was fully conscious.”

“We just told him to sit tight,” he said.

The man broke several bones.
